but I have to take it easy with the meds that have a drying effect (Sudafed, or other antihistamines) Although they help with the headache, they have lingering effects on our entire upper respiratory system. If you do go the Sudafed route, be sure to keep up with your HS treatments so that the infection doesn't spread.

Just for clarification, two things:

#1 Sudafed is not an anti-histamine

#2 1st generation anti-histamines, such as Benedryl, have anti-cholinergic affects. Some 2nd generation anti-histamines such as Zyrtec do as well. Claritin and Allergra, however, by been proven to not have anti-cholinergic affects (as stated in their FDA approved presecribing information).

I know this may sound dumb, but drink a lot. Keeping hydrated always makes my head and chest feel better when I'm stuffed up. Like I can blow the snot out of my nose rather than just have sniffles.
Good luck & feel better.

I don't have CF, but do have sinus problems, get sinus infections from time to time. I do saline nasal rinses, but if it's really bad I'll take a hot shower or soak in the tub and use Dr. Bronners (Sp) liquid castille peppermint soap. It's really minty and cooling and really seems to help clear out my nasal passages. Sometimes I'll soak in the tub with some of it on a washcloth draped over my forehead & nose.

I also drink a lot of water, juice. Mix up some hot lemonade with a dash of cayenne pepper (makes my nose run).

Two things:
Neil-med sinus rinse...walgreens and cvs have this product. Mix 8 oz boiled distilled water with one packet and use the bottle to rinse out sinus/nose.

Oregano oil. I use four drops under my tongue 2 times a day. Totally has kept me well and keeps anything from going into my lungs.

These 2 things have kept me cold free for years. I have had one cold in 3.5 years...knock on wood<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

refuse to allow yourself to sniffle. I'm convinced sniffling propels germs into your lungs. blow, blow, blow.

sinus rinse with neti pot. 1 gallon sterile water, 4 TBSP. baking soda, 4 TBSP. kosher salt.

Afrin if congested and swollen but don't use for more than 2-3 days or your body starts to get addicted and creates phantom symptoms.

Sudafed (sudaphedrine)

SLEEP

10,000 mg of Vit C each day as well as Zinc lozenges. 10-12 glasses of water. mix in a small amount of favorite juice to make it more palatable or mix in Emergen-C packet.

Visualize a clean body

I usually use the saline spray also. It helps to loosen up anything thats already in there so i can blow it out, or if its really far back i can snort it into my mouth to spit it out. When i start with a sinus problem, i also like to gargle with Listerine several times a day ( usually when my sinus's act up my throat gets a bit scratchy also) The alcohol in the Listerine can help to kill any infection that may be lingering behind.

I second the Neil Med sinus rinse system...it is the best we've used and you mix the saline each time so you do worry about the bacteria/cleanliness. Just used it last night on Benny (he is getting the nasty 2 year old molars).

Here is a link if anyone needs it $12.99 at Walgreens...<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.walgreens.com/search/search_results.jsp?_dyncharset=ASCII&term=Neil+Med">http://www.walgreens.com/searc...et=ASCII&term=Neil+Med</a>
