Smokers cough around CFers

I get nervous too around one of DH's uncles who used to smoke -- now he smokes cigars and doesn't inhale because he has "asthma", for which he needs to use a nebulizer (after not inhaling) Fortunately, he doesn't come to many family events and DS is usually on the go and doesn't have much to do with him.

What I WAS concerned about earlier this year was my FIL, who has sinus issues, has had several surgeries over the years -- and the last time he had a miserable sinus infection, my husband took MIL aside and explained we were concerned about what his dad could be harboring in his sinuses -- especially since my FIL tends to use a hanky, which he carries around and stuffs back in his pocket -- haven't been able to address that issue yet -- but I digress...

Anyway, my MIL goes along to the ENT appointments and requests they do a culture to make sure he's not growing anything nasty.

LouLou,

Actually, my mom is the young one. She was pregnant with me at 15, married my dad (who was 21 at the time) and had me at the age 16. I will be 39 this fall. My parents will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary next March...which is amazing with being married at such a young age! They truely are remarkable people who have worked VERY hard and are successful business owners. I am very proud of them

I agree that maybe a sputum test would be a good idea. Now, how to go about this one...this may take some creativity. My mom is very stubborn and headstrong when it comes to people telling her what to do

I am going to do some research on line as suggested by Melissa Can't believe I didn't think of doing that myself- seeing I research everything else healthwise on-line when it comes to my family!

Edited to add that I must like smiley faces...I just noticed how many I used in my messages! Sorry for all the smiley faces I must be a generally happy person for goodness sake!

There is just something about cigarete smoke that is really nasty, I can handle being around a buddies Hooka or people smoking pot without it bothering my lungs at all...but cigarete smoke just drives me crazy, even if some1 goes outside smokes a cig and comes back inside, its so strong it smells like they are still smoking for 10-15 minutes, dont know y they are so potent.

I agree that maybe a sputum test would be a good idea. Now, how to go about this one...this may take some creativity. My mom is very stubborn and headstrong when it comes to people telling her what to do

Well I would think you could describe why it is important and what your concerns are, even back it up if research proved fruitful. I woudl hope she woudl put her grandkids health as a top priority and do what is necessary but if she doesnt then I would say withholding visitation is well within the realm of 'reasonable'. Just my 2 cents, great initial ? btw, I have never thought of that!
