Hi everyone,

Does anyone else ever get black kind of dust dots in their sputum when you do your chest clearance and if so do you have any idea what it is? It's new and is freaking me out a little bit.

Thank you

Hi Ruby,
There are two things that this could be. Either it's little bits of dried blood or, it's evidence of aspergillus. Have you felt particularly wheezy lately? If so you may be experiencing symptoms of allegric broncho-pulmonary aspergilliosis. It would be a good idea to check with your doctor. He/she may order some lab work that will involve a sputum culture, and a blood test to see if your IgE levels are elevated.

Okay my reply may seem like a joke but I just want to state right now that I am 100% serious.

Make sure you have NOT eaten anything black shortly before you cough up the sputum with black specks. I say this because the only times I have EVER gotten black specks - truly black specks - in my sputum iI had eaten oreos shortly beforehand and it was just remnants from the oreos on my tongue and teeth and such that came out with the sputum.

Just a bit of a different thought. Otherwise I think that the other two posters are most likely correct. Just wanted to share my off the wall experience <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">.

Hiya

I do not have CF...my daughter does... but I do have bronchiectasis and apba. I get black dots when I have a flare up of apba. Normally I have "regular" sputum but this is different... it is dots (sometimes pin head size up to match head size) that I can feel as I am coughing up. A whole lot can come up at once or sometimes just the one or a few. It is fungus ( I think they call them casts) and they are grose. If I am having V Fend (anti fungal drug) and prednisolone..I will cough them up for days on end while ususally feeling crappy, feverish. Your blood IGE will tell you if it is aspergillus. I would definately have ige levels taken and your sputum checked cos damage is being done. It is freaky..I agree.
Good luck
