I my name is Cindi, I am 25 years old, married with 5 kids. Our youngest daughter is 5 months old, she was born at a very healthy 8lbs 5oz, no complications, however from day one she has been an extremly fussy baby..especially when it comes to feeding time. She is classified now as Failure to Thrive, which breaks my heart. She is 11lbs 14oz after losing half a pound..again..sigh.. At first they thought it was AR, she was given Zantak with no improvement. I was then told to stop BFomg which i really didnt want but decided to do for her anyway...still no improvment..she is on Alimentum Formula and it is a struggle to feed her 50% of the time..she will start out all hungry and then 1 ounce in she starts screaming like i have broken her leg..on a good day she eats 25 ounces on bad ones maybe 10 ounces..The Dr.s are going to be doing a Sweat Test on her for CF, which i am unsure of why since she doesnt have any of the symptoms for CF besides Failure to thrive?? They are also going to be doing an Upper GI on her as well, although i dont think she has GERD either since she doesnt spit up nor is Failure to Thrive a symptom of GERD...so I guess my question for you all is when your LO's were diagnosed with CF what where there symptoms...Also what is involved with this Sweat Test??

Thanks Cindi and MaKenna

DS was diagnosed shortly after birth due to a bowel obstruction. Loose stools, difficulty gaining weight. Wasn't really salty when I kissed his forehead until he was a little older. He also had reflux, so was put on zantac. Was a terrible eater, too.

Sweat test involves putting little bands on each arm to measure the amount of salt/sodium in their sweat.

You came to the right site Cindi. My daughter was diagnosed two weeks after birth with Cystic Fibrosis. She had no symptoms except her Failure to Thrive, and a large number of stools each day. At two weeks old, our Ped. sent us to do a Sweat Test.

A sweat test is a test where they put a solution on your DD's arm, which causes her to sweat. They put gauze on it, to collect the sweat, and an electrode over that, to stimulate the chemical, and produce the sweat. The electrode DOES NOT hurt, and she won't even realize it's there. After about an hour, they remove the gauze, and send it to be analyzed. You usually get the results back the next day.

Paige's came back positive, of course, and if that happens, you're scheduled to see a CF specialist at an accredited hospital.

I don't think your daughter fits the symptoms though, but CF is different in every person. My daughter was eating 6 oz every hour to two hours, and still not getting full, or gaining weight.

I know some of what you are going through right now, as it's only been a month since our diagnosis. Hang in there though, and you will get through this! I'll pray for your daughter.

Best of luck, and I'm here if you need to talk!

Thanks for replying...so are they measuring to see if she has salt in her sweat or no salt?
