Is anyone here using "The Vest"? If so could you tell me the pros/cons, likes/dislikes, of the device and if you have had a good or bad experience with it.

Tell me your "VEST

I use the vest and now like it. When I first got it I didnt like it. It hurt and was not helpful in the least. When finally telling the truth to my clinic about my compliance with it, we addressed the issues. They sat with me to find the right pressure & frequencies to get the most for me. The recommended settings dont always work for people. What I will say is that if I am extra sick (I mean really congested & needing iv's) that a bit of manual CPT gives the extra that the vest doesnt. I also feel that part of that is I am "forced" to cough more often during CPT rather then vesting thru it. Since changing the frequencies etc I have found that it also relaxes my back muscles which is a major obstacle for me since they influence my airways very much.

DS has been using the vest for a couple of months. Like the convenience. Can plug him in and he can watch cartoons and snack. Previously when we did CPT, sometimes he couldn't see the tv and would get cranky. Also like it that when one of us is out of town, we don't need to rely on relatives to come into help or if by ourselves, CPT would take twice as long -- would have to do it one handed in order to hold the nebs.

Wish the tubes were longer. DS is sorta stuck sitting on one side of the bed -- best place for the vest machine is in the bottom of the night stand.

It is a tad loud, so with the nebulizer, the tv is usually pretty loud.

I could also tell shortly after he began using it that it was actually bringing some stuff up.

Tell me your "VEST

I don't like the vest. but I use it anyway.
...funny you bring this up, I was just cursing at mine today...

* It makes me itch all over, I have to stop frequently to scratch til I bleed.

* I have asthma and take short breaths as it is, even when the pressure is low on the vest, it's hard for me to breath...plus a lower pressure doesn't let it fit snuggly enough and then moves so that it's vibrating my kidneys, so that later that day I felt like I got punched in the kidneys.

* Furthermore, Unlike Jazzy'smom (melissa), I find it contributing to my lower back troubles. So much so that while in the hospital I have them use other methods - since I'm sitting around so much already, my back will spasm if I use the vest there, that on top of crappy hospital beds, I'm in agony.

However, It is the answer to those of us living alone etc.

I agree with Liza - I have to crank the tv to hear it while doing treatment. I'm thinking about getting earplugs to plug into the tv. Also, I agree it's rather cumbersome with the tubes - moving around a little bit can make them pop out, then you have to stop everything and fix it.
I'm also going to get the stand for mine, so that I can roll it around - right now it's on the floor - and that may help the problem with the tubes too. Dunno though.

I hate the vest, but I use it anyway.
Best Wishes

I guess I should have clarified. When I have lower back pain this does aggrivate it. The comforting part I am referring to is like mid back....would be level with my diaphram. This is the section that most bothers me so I didnt think of mentioning the lower back exception.

gotcha

Do you think your back problems are due to CF? I've had lower back problems since I was 20. I don't know if it's from arthritis or osteopenia or what. I guess it would be difficult to determine if it's a CF thing or just because.
