Using Gaming to Excercise!

There are many aspects of taking care of yourself when you have CF,doing treatments, eating right, taking pills and excercising are all important for us to maintain good health. For myself,my worst area is excercise, sometimes I just cant bring myself to get out and go for a walk or jog.
Luckily being in 2010 we have many other options to get our daily excercise, gaming consoles are now aimed at getting people off the couch and moving around while doing something they enjoy.
I checked out the Wii and altho it was fun I went for a PS3 Move, Xbox also has Kinect where your body is the controller.
My first game I bought was Dance Dance Revolution, for those that dont know its a dancing game where you move your feet to the music( and on PS3 you also move your arms) and I had a blast while at the same time getting a work out, sweating my butt off and coughing up crap.
I was curious if any of you also have tried excercising with a gameing system and if you enjoyed it better then regular excercise.
If yes I'd love to hear which system you have and which games you find are the most enjoyable.
Thankyou

Hubby does use gaming systems quite a bit for exercise though sometimes he is just too tired for it but when he does do it, he keeps at it until he is dropping in sweat. I like to join in with him as well.

But I definitely recommend DDR for people our age and younger. It makes exercise fun for everyone and plus the family can get involved with it. We recently just got Kinect and oh my goodness is that the best thing in the whole world for exercise. It wore me out long before it wore him out. Lol.

I firmly believe especially with CF if you're going to exercize the energy should be spent on weightlifting/strength as much as possible as that will keep us considerably heavier (training at home trying to hit every major musclegroup atleast once a week I can maintain some 20 extra pounds this way), stronger, strengthen our bones, etc. much less so with cardio-exercize while the effects of lungclearance and endurance buildup are the same.

But indeed, motivation is probably like 80% of training.. and at extreme lows when not feeling well or having had some setbacks. For me just the feeling of quickly losing strength and watching the scale run back when not training tends to make me keep it up. (my fev1's are in the 30%'s but I can still do it fairly well as strengthtraining sets are fairly short with the added benefit of giving short intense loads on the body while with cardio the lungs are much more the limiting factor and can hardly load my body at all.)

But if I do want a cardio workout..with my regular PC I bolt my steeringwheel to the table, pedals on the ground and run Live For Speed, a realistic car race simulator with very good online capabilities, very intense, hard on the arms.. (not to be confused with Need for speed which is not realistic at all.) here's a clip of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAvj0iY1Zig

I recently started using the WII. My fiancee and I bought it about two years ago and have not used it much since then (he is more of an Xbox guy), so I was beginning to think it was a waste of money. Well we live on the first floor of a large apartment building, so it was the perfect time to test out how it was with working out. And it was great, if I have the motivation.

I have the WII fit and balance board and I find it really helpful in targeting certain muscle groups. You can go in to My Wii Routines (I think thats what its called) and select areas you want to work on and the Wii will tell you what activities to do. It really does work! When I first got sick a few weeks ago, I had done the Ab workout and then with all my coughing from being sick, my abs HURT like hell! I mean, I know it was a good thing, but because I was sick it didn't feel good.

I don't really have a problem with keeping weight on, so my target would be to strengthen what I have and I think the Wii fit is a great option. The one problem I see, would be that with the balance board, I can't wear shoes, so I worry that I may be damaging my joints with the pounding (like with the more aerobic exercises).

Does anyone have any better suggestions for WII? Like something like DDR or something more aerobic where I get my lungs working?

This is a great thread! I love being able to do the workout at home, because I hate the treadmill and/or other gym activities...never know what to work on with weights and stuff.

I'm not the one with CF in our family, but for McGrad2006, I use My Fitness Coach from wii. It doesn't use the balance board so you can wear your shoes. It tailors your routine to your ability level, increasing the intensity as you progress, and it uses your equipment (ie exercise ball, free weights, stepper, etc.)

I used this once or twice a week, along with run/walking in the neighborhood, and a kickboxing video to lose weight and increase muscle mass.

I actually have that...but I don't have any of the equipment it recommends...lol. I used to when I lived at my moms, but we don't really have the room here.
