Ok, I wanted some peoples opinions on this because this has been a big issue in our neck of the woods. Opinions of all types are welcome, but please be mature and somewhat civil to each other. This will be off topic but interesting nonetheless.

There used to be a pretty seedy bar right across the street from me (well one block over across the highway), I used to go there a ton and I loved it. It was REAL bad for a long time...Think of the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze, and that was basically the bar, but with more of a white trash flavor to it, with tons of very promiscuous women/men etc (basically a den of ill repute if you will, but it was a bar/dance club). I had a LOT of fun there when I had long hair

Anyways the place closed down, and someone else bought it. They wanted to put in a bikini bar in there, but the local "family values" groups freaked out and did the whole "we don't want a place like that in our neighborhood" angle. The place won't even be topless that I know of, it will just be chicks in bikinis serving beer and dancing for you and possibly giving a lap dance or whatever. Well our local county commissioner (who I HATE for other reasons) got involved and made it her political soap box in order to further her career to get deeper into politics.

Now for the specifics. The place is 100% correctly zoned, meaning legally it has every right to be there. They knew damn well ahead of time that ANY business of ANY type was fully able to go in there, but they apparently didnt care. Now that it's there, and tonight is opening night, they seem to think the world is coming to an end. I do personally believe that they could have found a better location, but a fully popular bar was already there (the bar I used to go to).

One of the noted problems is that there is a dance academy there, so there are quite a few young girls in leotards near there DURING THE DAY and EARLY EVENING. I'm not sure what time the place will operate, but that is still not the places fault. I'm more of a political "Centrist", meaning I use both sides of the spectrum for political beliefs to choose what makes sense, and I pretty much abide by the constitution and the bill of rights overall, i'm generally one who believes that freedom of choice is the way to go, and whatever is LEGAL, and consenting ADULTS want to do, go for it.

So now this is a giant issue, and they will probably be going back and forth in court. I'm personally not a big patron of strip clubs, or even lame bikini bars, but I will be going there tonight just to flick my finger at the opportunistic politician that is using this as one of her steps to further her career. She fails to realize that by her drawing so much attention to this place, people will flock to the place in droves just to check it out, and many of those would have never gone in the first place.

So what is your take on this? My one friend is heavily religious, and can't seem to realize that regardless how people feel about something personally, as long as it's legal, people should be allowed to do whatever they want within those boundaries. I'm personally agnostic, so I can separate those strong personal feelings from the issue at hand. I also look at things as a "Isn't there something more important we could be B**ching about?" angle. If those same soccer moms who are freaking out about a place thats a tad worse than the avergae Hooters restaurant would channel that same exact energy into helping to gain charitable money for say pediatric cancer, or cleaning up our environment, or helping homeless abused animals, just think how much we could accomplish?

Anyways, was just curious what you guys thought. (lets be somewhat civil).

I say let it go. But I don't really care about those kind of things. It's not violating anyone.

I could care less if its not hurting anyone. What my question is, is it located in a family area? Are there kids that walk by all the time? Are there undersirables lurking about that area? Will kids be harmed, or see lewd acts around the area? I can understand not wanting your kids exposed to that sort of thing. That I can understand. If there are kids around the area quite a bit, then I would suggest moving the bar to a different area of the city, but at the same time - aren't there kids all over the city? We try to limit these types of bars to areas where we know our kids won't be around, but kids are around all the time. If they're not seeing this stuff on the street, then they're seeing it on TV, or on the internet. The way I see it, is if you don't want your kids around it, make sure of it yourself. Make sure you don't have your kids around that area.

We had the same problem in our area. One topless placed closed down & the new owner wanted to reopen as a topless place. All hell broke loose & they wanted it so it couldnt happen. Nobody thought of that when the other place closed. They could have changed the ordnances/codes/laws then to assure it didnt happen, but they didnt. So now this new owner has the perfect location with some of the previous cliental & the laws stating it can happen. Well he did open & is doing well. They did change the laws for future businesses. So until this place folds it stays. They did it with adult book stores near us also. Come to think of it for a little country area we have many topless bars & porno shops.....hmmmm! SeanDavis want me to look for additional thongs for you?!

I agree that maybe it should move it there are a lot of kids in the area but I think that it mostly has to do with image. I doubt this guy even cares about the kids or anything else and that it is all about appearances. If he is wanting the area to be more "higher class" then he won't want it and will do anything in his power to stop it. Maybe it is pessimistic but I think that a lot of politics is about appearances and this probably is too. I come from an area that doesn't allow any fast food places because of the look of them. How totally stupid is that? Just a bunch of snobs I think. So maybe this is like that, but regarding topless like bars.

Sometimes, just being legal (assuming the factor of kids and "unwanted elements" are not part of the "legality") does not always mean socially responsible, or even apropriate.
I agree that if the new place actually brings in the unwanted "elements" like a magnet, it does not belong there.
The first time I ever went to a Hooters (and I only got to go once) was last year in February, with my brother-in-law! And that was located in a Shopping Mall!! if the place in question is less than that (my brother-in-law even brought his 5 year old daughter in there once-and he's very strict with raising her with the Christian values!), it doesn't belong there in my opinion.
Now, as for those who have the energy of motivation for demonstrations, but don't do anything for the homeless in need during the winter, etc., seem to have their scruples all mixed up!
Oh, Yea, BTW, loved the movie "Roadhouse" w/Swayze...not sure if he really knew any martial arts, or did it just for the movie, but heard he was really a dancer, and a lot of dancers can learn those moves pretty quick (don't think they have any power behind it right away, though!).

I know that is not a concern of yours, but if you ever go to sell, it would be of a potential buyer. We once fell in love with the most beautiful home in an "up and coming" area. After driving around a bit, we realized a pond shop was within walking distance and for that reason alone, we passed. The old bar may have been "seedy" but it probably never had as much press as this new place. I am curious what your fiancee thinks. LOL

She thinks it's stupid, as I do also. The bar that used to be there had about 10 times the amount of drugs and general human walking feces than any bikini bar could ever produce. As far as property values, I dunno, but I do know it happens. We had an air conditioning place move in down the street (literally down the street from me, i could throw a rock and hit it, it's in our own neighborhood), where it used to be all residential, now we have an air conditioning company. I'm sure that did something to our value. As far as value goes personally, I don't care because i'm going to live in this house till I die, and my lady will have it after that. The majority of the people out there complaining don't live in my neighborhood, and I highly doubt they live in the other adjacent neighborhood. They just have a bad case of "NIMBY". To me, as long as it's legal, properly zoned, and between consenting adults, and it's not in everyone elses face, I'm all for the right to do something.

I personally find hunting retarded, especially when done without eating it (just killing crap to kill crap), at a knee jerk level, i'd outlaw that. But I realize just because I don't like something and don't do it and think it's really crap, doesn't mean I have the right to take that away from someone else who enjoys it. To me you can't legislate morality, and religion and politics definitely doesn't mix. I do understand that just because something is legal doesn't make it right (nazi germany for instance), but this topic ultimately boils down to people personally not liking something, and looking to political channels to stop it from happening.

I think the whole issue is idiotic. People really need to chill out when it comes to things like this in society today. So its a bikini bar. So what? You see worse at some public swimming pools on Friday nights. If they're worried about kids seeing something, there's a simple solution. Walk on the other side of the street. That's the problem today, people don't raise their kids anymore to know right from wrong. They depend on TV and the government regulations to do it for them. Its disturbing... And I agree with you Sean, there are a helluva lot more problems that politicians need to be worried about than a nudie bar. Gimme a break... This country has its head shoved so far up the other end now its rediculous.

When i was a child we had a topless bar close by and everytime we passed it on the way to my grandmoms house i asked my mom what "stopless go-go" meant (thats what the sign said). She told me it meant topless and that ended that. No damage to me as a child and i couldnt have cared less .... And still dont care about places like that. There will always be places like that, but as long as they make sure no-one can see inside from the outside, and try to keep the place "clean" of problems, it shouldn't be too much of a prob.

I personally don't think it is a big deal.... I live in Detroit, MI - 1 mile from the "Landing Strip"... never damaged my "family values". Its right next door to our local grocery store, no big deal.
