What do you eat before a workout?

Hi Sonia, out of interest...what do you eat that doesn't work for you (i.e. what did you have bad experiences with)? .</end quote></div>

Well, I have had bananas and seem to get really bad reflux with them (wierd, huh?), pasta (again though the reflux and just too "heavy" for me before a run, milk and cookies (again, too heavy and added to reflux issues), and candybars (with nuts in them) and blood sugars dropped. So, I've tried lots of different things. Peanuts and/or peanut butter bread has seemed to work well, but it gets old eating that 4X a week.

Thank you very much, everyone for such awesome suggestions and letting me know what works for you! Once thing I never tried was protein bars. May have to give them a go.

My biggest issue isnt' so much the blood sugars dropping, but more of the reflux being an issue (and I am on Rx for it twice a day!)...

Lindsey, you had some good suggestions about taking gatorade/water and the Special K bars to curb the blood sugar and yes, I am insulin dependent, but VERY VERY rarely do I take it since I'm so active and it really makes me nervous to take it before/after a workout cause you never know what will happen with exertion.

Anyway, do the suggestions ya'll have mentioned give you GERD? Protein bars, Ensure, etc? I'm mostly worried about that cause that is the worst feeling when you're running and either can't breathe because of the acid buildup or just feel like vomitting cause of being full and the acid building up.

Thanks again, guys!!

Sonia,

I had a couple thoughts about the reflux while running. Is the reflux from the jumping up and down part of the exersize? maybe doing a lower impact aerobic exersize like he eliptical machine? or swimming? I love running so I understand if you wouldn't want to switch your routine. THis may sound wierd as well but what about taking a couple TUMS before your work-out, course I'ld check with your doc first to make sure it's ok and doesn't interact with any of your other meds. I know i had awful heartburn when I was pregnant and TUMS really helped plus had some additional calcium in them.

Hi, Rebecca...

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I'm SURE its from the jumping up and down when running! LOL... I don't get it say riding a bicycle or doing elliptical at all... but, unfortunately, the other forms of cardio for me just don't give me that "rush" that running does. I just don't feel like I've gotten a kick-butt workout when I do lower impact stuff... I still get a great increase in HR and everything, but for some reason I just don't feel in my mind that its as good... I know its all in my head, but I honestly didn't start seeing a serious increase in FEV1 until I starting running regularily vs. doing the elliptical, so now I'm afraid to switch back in case it goes down cause of it, ya know? I don't know. I have started to do elliptical every 3-4 workouts or so though when I've just had something to eat that I KNOW will cause me issues. LOL... Somehow my blood sugar and everything seems to respond better to elliptical.

As far as the TUMS, I'm already on Prevacid twice a day along with Prilosec as needed, so that should be taking care of the acid as long as I was eating the right things... LOL. I do take TUMS on occasion when my "burn" breaks through.

Thanks for pondering this and the suggestion! I appreciate it.

I'm sure it will just take trial and error to see which food do/don't cause me "issues" with a run, but just thought maybe someone would have some suggestion other than what I already know works (peanut butter... LOL... I get so burnt out of that!).

Anyway, thanks again everyone!
