Has anyone ever noticed a difference between IV Zyvox and Oral Zyvox as far as the effectiveness goes?

also, what are some of the side effects you have experienced while you are on it?I have only ever been on IV form of it but I was wondering about the PO version of it...

Thanks

Jennifer,

My daughter has only taken oral Zyvox , course she's only 4. The oral zyvox has seemed to work well for her, I think better than IV Vanco(which she's been on one time). Side effects for oral Zyvox have been diahrea and since she 's so little she takes the liquid form and it takes horrible. We up her probiotic to twice a day if she's on zyvox. again since she's so little it's hard to tell if there were other side effects but she's pretty capable of telling me how she feels. When my daughter was in the hospital almost 2 years ago I had asked about IV Zyvox and the told me it didn't come IV, maybe for little kids or maybe the person I asked was wrong.

One of my daughters has taken oral Zyvox, and it worked very well against her MRSA. She has actually had two clear cultures (of MRSA) since taking it. She has not had IV Zyvox, so I know nothing about that. She was on IV Vancomycin, and the oral Zyvox actually seemed to work as well, if not better.

I just got a letter in the mail from our insurance carrier over the weekend stating that it no longer covers Zyvox I hope we don't need it again. I do know it was expensive! And as Rebecca says, it tastes terrible in liquid form, but did the trick.

I have had both IV and Oral Zyvox and actually when I am on IVs they normally put me on IV Zyvox while in hospital and switch me to oral when I go home. So each course of meds I get a little of both.

I personally don't notice a difference in effectiveness - both always work well for me. I prefer oral because I can take it without the dextrose mixture. I am unable to get Zyvox mixed in Saline, so my sugars are through the roof when I am taking it IV.

As for side effects that I notice with oral zyvox. I have noticed that I get horrible heartburn and reflux issues. I get the typical diarrhea - but it is hard to determine if it is a result of Zyvox or another med or the combination of all the meds because I rarely have taken only Zyvox to treat an exacerbation.

Other than the reflux I really don't have many issues with Zyvox. either oral or IV - but the heart burn is worse with the oral med and nothing really seems to help it either (well at least for me).

Take Care and hope it works well for ya

There is always a difference in efficacy between a PO antibiotic and an IV antibiotic.
