tough one eh!, 50/50. any chance of ivf using your egg and husbands sperm then using science to see if the embryo has both cf genes/ i dont know if thats possible or even ethical however its my thought anyway. consideration must go to the child also. even if the child did not have cf, are you healthy enough to be a nurturing mother for the next decade or more? i never thought of that until a child of someone with CF piped up on here with the thought the parents only consider themselves and not the quality of life the child will be given. i have two boys aged 8 and 10. my battle with cf now weighs heavily on their emmotions as they grow older and more aware of CF's consequenses and limitations. that being said i wouldnt change our decission to have children. all the best and i hope you gain peace over this decission regardless of what you decide. 75% chance that the child will have CF and 15% chance that it will be a carrier....

Too much of a risk for me!

Hi Kate, I'm sorry for this news that you've recieved. I know that there have been couples who have successfully gotten IVF with PGD approved through their insurance. The PGD lets you take out the embryos that are affected with CF (and donate them to science or destroy them), and use the embryo's that in your case, would be CF carriers.

You would want to present the arguement to the ins. company in a manner that outlines the costs to care for someone with CF (you could use a year of your own medical bills for example, or a few years). Then get some price averages of IVF with PGD in your area and compare the 1x cost of IVF with PGD to the lifetime cost of them carrying someone with CF. Let them know that you are giving them an option to pay less in the long run.

I know there was 1 couple on the board who was successful with this, but I don't remember their name. I'll do a search and see what I can find.

Your own health aside, I don't like to gamble and so I wouldn't take the risk.
I know it's sad and news you certainly did not expect, but at least you looked into it first.
(and you know there is always adoption)

Here's some of my family history facts:
My mom gave birth to 6 children:
3 of them passed away (cf),
one of them is living w/cf (me)
I don't know if the other two are carriers or not
so 4 out of 6 had cf.
