Are you (or your child) getting the most out of your treatments?

Wow....I was quoted I feel special

I did it wrong for a LONG time too!!!! Then my Dr asked me what I was doing AFTER the vest and I got that deer in headlights look and he explained to me that YOU have to work to get stuff up. All the vest does is loosen the stuff it doesn't actually get it out for you. Haha who would have thought So now its accapella and huffing after a vest treatment....oh and if I add the shower in right after, look out! Huffing IN the shower is a god-send for me LOL!!!!!! I feel lighter when I am done

When I use the vest I use 2 different settings. The frequency is at 10 and the pressure is at 8. Any more and I feel like I'm being squished. Then the last 5-10 minutes I up the frequency to 15 and get all shakin up and then when I am done I don't have to put so much effort into coughing the stuff out. It is all loose for me. Also my Dr told me that coughing is not good (what???) but rather try to huff it out. Ask your Dr if they can show you how to huff. This gets the junk up higher so that when you do cough you can get stuff out and not put so much force on your lungs. It does work and after 7 years of being told to huff I am finally doing it and it does work for me.

Editted to add: I also do HTS with the vest. Without it I just can't get the stuff loose. My center said alot of people find this is much more productive then "dry-vesting".

Here is what I do, and who knows if it is correct, but I do get stuff up with each vest, even if I feel pretty clear. I start off with albuterol, and a 10mhz setting for 5-10 mins. At the end of that and the end of my albuterol, I crank the machine up to the max 25mhz and breathe in deep with it vibrating the crap out of me and force air out/cough and cough up some goo. Then I do the same thing with setting 15mhz, and finally 20mhz. I do albuterol first, then HTS, then collistin, then I finish off with pulmozyme with my vest coughing.

Sound ok? Ive had the vest for so long, I forgot what the actual recommended settings and operation were for it heh.

Well believe it or not i was given a"Vest Airway Clearance Prescription" The resp. team at St. Vincents took the time to tell me what to do.. Isn't that nice after having it for 11 years and really just breathing in w/ neb. and not doing much more... Everyone is different so i think you have to adjust the settings that work best for you.. The "script" has How many treatments per day (2), Total treatment time (20 min.), A check for the meds., Under Pressure (5 or 6), Under Frequency (10) for 4 min. , (12) for 4 min. (13 or 14) for 4 min. then (13 or 14) for 4 min and again (13 or 14) for 4 min. With coughing up after ea. set.. I was also told to first breath in through my nose, then blow out like blowing a candle a few times, then huff or cough whichever gets better results.. I also use a cup to spit it out now, now i can see what i'm spitting out and how much.. My old treatment was nothing like this.. I very rarely got anything up.. Of course everyone is different and tolerates treatments differently.. Bottom line, now i feel like i am actually doing something worth while.. joni

i felt the same way when i went to visit Warwick and he told me my vest jacket was the worst fitting jacket he had ever seen. talk about a slap in the face.

now my CF center checks the fit of jackets for their patients... i made sure to let them know that i was cut short on my vest efficacy because no one ever checked...
