Hello, friends

So I've posted before that I've had dark (brown) streaked sputum in the past... Stuff that was hardly there.

Well, now tonight, I notice I'm coughing sputum with lots of bright red blood in it and I'm freakin' out! I mean, I've upped my HS to twice a day about 2 weeks ago and have been doing that, and have noticed with my cold coming and going my cough has gotten more gunky and productive and when I cough its that uncontrollable cough that you can't catch your breath.

Well, the weird thing is today I'm actually feeling BETTER. I jogged at the gym, I have energy and have gotten things done around the house. But, then tonight when I coughed it was about 3/4 blood. And, since then, when I've coughed its been at least 3/4 blood.

What is going on??? I know that I've been coughing until my lungs literally hurt so bad I've had to lay on a heat pad... So, could it be this increase in cough is agravating something in my lungs and causing them to bleed?

I'm sorry if this has been asked again and again, but this is really new to me and I'm kinda freakin' out without my DH here to calm my nerves.

... Speaking of which... Does anyone notice that when you're really stressed or nervous you have more hymoptysis?

Thanks guys,

Oh Sonia,

You really are going through a tough time. I saw your other thread and I think the general consensus on this site is that... you have stress. And it's contributing to all the physical things that are bothering you at the moment.

Okay, now let's look at the facts. You are upset. You do have a cold. Your sinuses are dripping down your throat into your lungs, probably causing irritation, and probably a cough. You're coughing hard. You went jogging. And the sputum is turning bloodier. Connection?

What to do? I can only tell you what I do. If I have a change in my condition I call the doctor. So first I will suggest that. Then I will tell you what I did in a similar circumstance. Recently after a few exposures to smoke, I started coughing up blood (which ultimately lasted about a week.) My doctor said that my lungs were probably very irritated (and probably looked like my throat with bright red vessels )and that a small blood vessel apparently had broken and continued to bleed. She told me to stop all powdered medicines like Spiriva and Foradil because they can be irritating and gave me nebulized meds instead.

Next I had to stop the Hypertonic Saline and the Flutter because after using, I was coughing up blood. But how to get the mucus out? In addition to Brovana (bronchodilator), I had to neb Ipratropium Bromide, I also inhaled .09 saline and did postural drainage or gentle CPT. Plus hot steamy showers.

The doctor told me not to move around much (certainly no exercise), drink cold liquids and put an ice pack on my chest to constrict the blood vessels. She told me not to drink anything hot. To stop all supplements that thin the blood like fish oil (or garlic).

The bleeding stopped.

So this is why I say call the doctor. My doctor changed my meds and came up with a plan if this routine didn't work. You also mentioned that your reflux was worse. Are you eating any comfort food like chocolate, wine, coffee? Or eating at night? Try sleeping on an incline and you can ask your doctor to try changing your stomach medicine. It may not be doing the job. And FYI, it is common for people with lung problems to have stomach problems. The two "tubes" are next to each other, so if one is inflamed, so is the other. Especially if your sinuses are dripping down.

As for your mental well-being, maybe call friends and family. It's good to talk things out. Or go rent an old movie like Annie Hall, and get some good endorphins going.

Hi Sonia,
It sounds like you have a lot going on right now. The extra coughing you have been doing can have a lot to do with hemoptysis. With all the years of coughing , especially as hard as we with cf do, the blood vessels can become enlarged and tortured( meaning twisted) which makes them prone to breaking easier.
Sometimes after not bleeding for a good long time, i will have a coughing jag like you mentioned and some bleeding will start. The lungs themselves can get irritated by infection, which we pretty much always have and you mentioned a cold coming and going and the cough gunkier than usual, it could also be just from irritation to your lungs.
I agree with Nightwriter above , maybe it would be a good idea to mention this to the Dr. Maybe you need to be on antitbiotics, or Vit. K if you arent already.
In my opinion stress can def. be a trigger for all sorts of health related problems and i think hemoptysis can possibly be included.

Stress is one of my biggest triggers for my bleeds.

I would lay off of the HTS until you at least speak with the doctor &/or the bleeds stop. HTS is great, but it can also be irritating.

Drink ice water during another bleed.

Sorry things are going haywire
