Ok everyone,

so I put on a shower gard to keep the site from getting wet. But It still doe's not help! Today it got socking wet! I was sooo mad! The IV people at aripa tell me no one showers when they are using there port? and I have my port in 24/7 for an IV med I take.. I have such bad tummy issues that I have to take Reglan IV shots 4 times a day to keep my tummy from getting upset.. and to help digestive my food.

What should I do or how do you guys shower with your port in all the time?

Thanks!

Well with just the port in, I shower whenever I want. If you're talking about the port alone, you can shower with that whenever you want.

If you mean with the port accessed, then I don't really shower when that happens. I bathe some, and my fiance washes my hair. And that's it, really.

It was my understanding that you can "de access" it to take a shower. I guess its not something you want to do a lot, but thats my understanding so you dont have to worry about keeping it dry!

I do not have one, but this was an appealing thing to me so that if I am receiving iv's for weeks & weeks I dont have to rely on the usual PICC routine.

I'm assuming you mean when accessed? I shower reguardless. My home health nurse usually dresses the site with a Tegaderm (which sticks to me like glue anyway), and as an extra precaution, I take a Zip-Lock sandwhich bag and paper tape and tape the baggie around the site securely. No, it doesn't keep 100% of the water out, but it works well enough that I feel confident. The worst that happens with me is that the Tegaderm gets a little water on it. But nothing ever gets to the actual needle access.

Hope that helps!
