Hyp Saline at night problems

When I do hyp saline past 8:00 pm or so, I have trouble falling asleep b/c I continue to cough up mucus. I know thats a good thing, but its annoying too. The effect of saline seems to last longer on me, it seems like several hours after I'm still losening up and getting stuff up.
Does anybody else have this? Have you found anything that helps with that nagging type annoying cough? I try to do my pm physio earlier, but some days you just can't get to it till later in the evening.
I also wonder if the saline irritates my airways and maybe makes them more reactive (constricting) b/c I do cough hard with saline. Maybe thats what keeps me up. Any tips on getting these lungs to calm down a little?

Hey Christian,

I don't know how to get it to calm down any, but have you tried drinking water periodically while you are doing your treatment. Sometimes that helps me to slow down the coughing. As I am doing the treatment - when I have been coughing alot - I will take a swig of water every few breaths I take of the saline.

Maybe try cutting the saline out at night every other night or something, if nothing works. That way you can get some sleep at least every other night if not every night. Even every few nights - like do the saline 4 days in a row in the evening and then take a day break or something like that - or break on the weekends.

I don't have the same issue so I can't offer to much other advice. I normally get increased coughing during the treatment but not much longer afterwards.

Take Care and I hope it gets better and you figure out a way to handle it.

My daughter had that problem. Now she only takes hypertonic saline in the morning. She does fine with it then.

hey Christian,

i have not had this problem with the HS. normally when i am done with my vest/saline/albuterol i feel like there's nothing left to cough up.

what strength of HS are you using? i recently decreased from almost 10% to 6% or 7% because my docs thought it might be irritating my airways and making my asthma worse. i know you are talking about something different but i guess i'm thinking maybe it is possible it is irritating you and you should think about decreasing the strength?? although i am not sure how effective HS is if you dilute it much more than 6%.

good luck.

Hey Christian,
I was having the same problem with the saline, I started doing it
just in the am. The doctors have since taken me off of it for
now b/c it was just to irritating. My doctor said that is
pretty common with adults, kids do not seem to have as much trouble
with it.
I hope it gets better for you.
I would do the HTS earlier in the night, farther away from bed time if your'e having trouble falling asleep. Kind of like caffine and exercise....

I just wanted to comment on what Laura mentioned about diluting the solution. I take 3% saline solution and I get plenty up with that. I actually would be bothered if my doc upped the solution with how productive my cough is and how much I cough with 3% solution.

So it can be effective even if it is not hypertonic - if it is just regular saline.
