We have a whirlpool whispersure 450 -- got it as an xmas gift -- they're pretty spendy and then the hepa filters, which need to be replaced annually run about $60-100, a package of 4 charcoal prefilters runs about $30, and those are replaced about every 4 months. Have it in DS's room and it really smells fresher.

The family member who got us this, originally was going to get us a sharper image ionic breeze because you can just wash off the filter; however, they got consumer reports shortly after making the purchase and it indicated for it to do any good at all you had to be a foot or two away from it. Thank goodness they didn't purchase it 'cuz I've also heard they emit ozone, which can cause breathing problems.

A coworker got two hepa filters from QVC, think they have the same ones at any home improvement store. Think the brand it hunter? Something like that and she's quite happy with them.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to close the windows and run the fan continuously to circulate the air through the filter. I know you say you don't want to invest in a furnace HEPA filter but these are inexpensive and do a pretty good job. Get a MERV rating of over 11 and switch out every 3 months or sooner if crudy. Don't use the fiberglass one's. Those are meant to protect the furnace and offer very little in the way of air pollutant protection.

I have had good luck with this company http://filters-now.com/ or you can buy them at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Additionally, a free standing air cleaning tower like the Bionaire lightnlife mentions are great too but they don't move the whole house air only a room's air.

Cool... thanks, everyone. Yes, I actually ONLY use Filtrete and get the most expensive and highest rating they have since we have two doggies who shed. So, its a start... However, the AC isn't running lately (its 67 degrees in my house right now! and colder if we leave windows open... brrrr...) so I'd like to have something that filters air no matter whether the AC is running or not.

Thanks for the info. though. I will look at home depot today and see what I can find that isn't going to break the bank. I will probably get something and put it in our living room, which opens directly to the den and kitchen, and is about half of our house! So, I would think that's sufficient for now anyway. With a $1400.00 carpet bill looming, we can't make any rash decisions right now, but still want something to filter the crap the carpet probably kicked up. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">
