We have a whirlpool whispersure 450 -- got it as an xmas gift -- they're pretty spendy and then the hepa filters, which need to be replaced annually run about $60-100, a package of 4 charcoal prefilters runs about $30, and those are replaced about every 4 months. Have it in DS's room and it really smells fresher.
The family member who got us this, originally was going to get us a sharper image ionic breeze because you can just wash off the filter; however, they got consumer reports shortly after making the purchase and it indicated for it to do any good at all you had to be a foot or two away from it. Thank goodness they didn't purchase it 'cuz I've also heard they emit ozone, which can cause breathing problems.
A coworker got two hepa filters from QVC, think they have the same ones at any home improvement store. Think the brand it hunter? Something like that and she's quite happy with them.
