I have a question for you guys. When my son was on antibiotics (which he hasn't been very much) I would give him yogurt (with the active) or acidophilos sp?. Does yogurt and acidolphilos do the same thing as culturelle sp? I looked today and the acidolphilos pills say probiotics on them and would be alot cheaper. Just wondering if they work the same or not. Thanks!!

PS I also bought him magnesium after reading about that. Also green tea (like 3 a week), 2 multis, vit E, Vit A & D, Juice Plus. I hope I'm not over doing his vitamins. But his last 2 checkups he gained 7 pounds each time and lung function was 98. Doc said he is doing great - so I guess we must be doing something right. THank God I learn so much here!!!

While I think eating yogart is a great thing for a young cfer, I think that unless the yogart lists the CFU (colony forming units) of healthy bacteria, you really have no idea the amount of good bacteria you are getting. You are better off taking a probiotic for various reasons...mainly absorption, and CFU number.

The reason we are all talking about culturelle is because it just so happens that l.casei is the bacterial strain used in many of the studies. Having said that, I believe that many probiotics for children (Nature's way Primadolphilus for one) do have l.casei and l. rhamnosus and others in them. This particular one DOES NOT contain Streptococcus thermophlus and many probiotics do. ....and most yogarts do as well. In my probiotic, I stay away from strptococcus thermophilus because it actually helps turn on the Th2 immune response which is exactly what we do not want in cf. If you look at the label and see the different strains make sure there is much less of this one, if any at all.

I give Nature's Way Primadophilus to my 5 year old nephew daily (no cf) and his allergy and asthma are MUCH better.....happened in a few month period. And he is not catching as many colds.

Thanks dramamama - So acidolphilos pills alone is not the same thing? Do you think its smart to start my son on magnesium too? I just want to do everything I can for him! Would you give the probiotic even though he hasn't been on antibiotics much (probably over a year since he's been on any)? His main problem has been sinus (polyp) issues and some digestive.

I just pulled a DanActive out of my fridge and lo and behold it has the S. Thermophilus in it along with L. Casei. You wouldn't know unless you look at the very small type at the bottom of the very small bottle. Almost had to get my reading glasses out to find it. Now I know to keep it away from son - actuallly bought it for myself, but it sort of has the texture of really thick whole milk and I got grossed out drinking it.
