Sick with a virus

So I just started IVs last night because I've been coughing and feeling crummy for about the past week. When I talked to my doctor to get it all set up I also mentioned that I had some viral cold symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, fatigue). She thought that I did in fact have a virus. but that I also had a CF infection because my body was so busy dealing with the cold and couldn't deal with the bacteria. Anyway, it looks as though I started IVs just in time because this morning I woke up and it's clear this virus is going to be a BIG one-two punch that would probably have knocked me completely off my feet for a while. This is a recurring pattern for me: be healthy, get a virus, have it morph into a CF exacerbation, and then suddenly need IV meds or other aggressive treatment. I'm curious as to what others do to avoid this sort of thing. I live in a HUGE city, work in a busy office, and am routinely on prednisone (which I think supresses your immune system?), so getting a cold in the winter seems kind of inevitable. But I'm SO sick of these sorts of mild viruses leading to serious lung infection. Any advice on how others deal with this would be greatly appreciated!

Hope the rest of you out there are healthy and enjoying the end of winter!

I wish I had your answer.

Viruses are what put me into the hospital in September, November & January. I run really high fevers & dehydrate immediately so I never really have a chance for it not to become something big.

when u find the answer let us know. you'll be a rich person.

seriously though, i take a glass of airborne every morning. i don't go around people i know are sick, and to be honest i am a germophobe.
ANYTIME i touch a door handle, a pen, those electronic credit card keypads, the side of a door, anything-i use purell or antibac wipes. if i can't immediately do that i cover my hand w my sleeve so i don't touch my eyes or face with that hand. it sounds nuts, but i have gotten less and less colds since i started doing this.

watch an episode of 'house clean is your house?' i think its on bravo network or oh oxygen channel. it will show you the gross truth about germs and you'll be scared straight.

as far as tuneups go-i've found that it doesn't really matter whether you have a virus or lung inf, if its time for a tune up its time. but, you can lessen your need for tuneups and up your chances of getting over a cold or virus by keeping your lungs scrubbed clean w a strict routine of therapies. that way the viruses have no place to get set in and incubate! are u doing that faithfully?

i feel your pain-cold season sucks.

When I get home from wherever I've been, the first thing I do is drop everything and wash my hands. Never touch my face, especially my nose, eyes, mouth area unless my hands have been washed. And I use Airborne too, like Christian. I try to stay clear of sick people, but when it's not possible, I always have Airborne on hand just in case.

Sorry to hear you're sick. Hang in there!
