So I just started IVs last night because I've been coughing and feeling crummy for about the past week. When I talked to my doctor to get it all set up I also mentioned that I had some viral cold symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, fatigue). She thought that I did in fact have a virus. but that I also had a CF infection because my body was so busy dealing with the cold and couldn't deal with the bacteria. Anyway, it looks as though I started IVs just in time because this morning I woke up and it's clear this virus is going to be a BIG one-two punch that would probably have knocked me completely off my feet for a while. This is a recurring pattern for me: be healthy, get a virus, have it morph into a CF exacerbation, and then suddenly need IV meds or other aggressive treatment. I'm curious as to what others do to avoid this sort of thing. I live in a HUGE city, work in a busy office, and am routinely on prednisone (which I think supresses your immune system?), so getting a cold in the winter seems kind of inevitable. But I'm SO sick of these sorts of mild viruses leading to serious lung infection. Any advice on how others deal with this would be greatly appreciated!
Hope the rest of you out there are healthy and enjoying the end of winter!
