sinus rinses - help

I did the whole syringe job for years and found no benefit from it...

It was only recently I found out I was doing it completely wrong, after 5 attempts to have sinus surgery and finally telling them where to go, I was then stuck with chronic sinuses, continuous cough from post nasal drip and no chance of getting my surgery...

anyhow- I was then given a flo care system from my CF nurse to try, it comes with a bottle that holds 250ml and a nozzle that when you squeeze the bottle when upright the solution comes out.... it also comes with pre made up packets....

The way sinus washes should be done (or how I do them now with remarkable success) is I shove the nozzle up one side and then squeeze the bottle, you can feel the sinuses fill up before draining out the other side, you then swap sides and repeat, after you have done both sides, blow your nose and be amazed LOL

I recently got over the flu and a sinus infection by just doubling my sinuses washes to twice a day without needing any ABS, which I have never been able to do since my tx...

I wish I had of known about the proper way to do my washes I think it would have benefitted me in my pre tx days as well as my post tx days

ps I am not saying that anyone has said their method of washes are wrong, just that I was doing them wrong...

I use this product and love it. It's called "SaltAire"

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=410830&previousURI=/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/search?page=3^Query=saline^ActiveCat=65^startLink=1

You don't have to mix anything, and it's a closed system, which helps keep it from becoming bacteria ridden. Plus, the squeezy (I know, that's not a word) thing on the side delivers a very comfortable amount each time. You don't have to worry about wasting the product like with other systems.

You're not supposed to lean your head back to do a rinse (poses a choking/gagging risk), you're supposed to lean forward over a sink or basin and flush with a steady enough rate that the saline water comes out your other nostril. If if comes out your mouth or back out of the nostril you squirt it in, you're doing it wrong.

I have been doing sinus rinses twice a day since I had transplant and OMG I wish I had done them sooner. These past few months are the first time in a long time that I have NOT had post nasal drip issues and the constant throat clearing cough.

I use the NeilMed sinus rinse solutions - just a basic saline solution you mix with sterile water. I have used different syringe type tools ranging from a bottle similar to one Freak recommended, I have used a syringe and also a bulb syringe. I have found that for me I like the bulb syringe better caues I can get smaller amounts of the solution in my nostil at a time. It takes a little bit longer than the bottle BUT it is just as effective for me and I think a bit more powerful of a blast.

I personally lean my head forward when I do the flushes because otherwise I cough and almost choke when the solution washes down the back of my throat. Even with my head tilted forward I still cough on occasion when the gunk drains out the back of my nose. Also I will add another thing I like about the bulb syringes is that I can get the tip of the syringe INTO my nostril pretty far so I can really get pressure in there to loosen the junk up. The other systems I used the tip of the device would stop at the entrance to my nose.

Well whatever way you choose to do them I hope that they are successful for you and you can really see the benefit.

Take Care,
Lindsey
