Here in Portugal we're all default donors for some 10 years now (if we don't opt out of course).
I remember at the time the only ppl against the new directive were the old and conservative. But many didn't even bother to go to the public health office to opt out... . which was great! tee hee!

I believe that this should be the case everywhere unless you opt out, but I really don't understand the religous beliefs behind not donating organs either so maybe it should just be the case all around--why not save a life since yours is gone.

Inmates should definetly have to donate organs.

They should come up with something similiar to the selective service for organ donation that you have to fill out when you turn 18 that states if you want to donate your organs or not if the above mentioned program couldn't be an option.

I am an organ donor. The idea of a default opt in is fine with me, but I would be very concerned about the conflict of interest it seems to put the doctors in -- they can say it wouldn't happen all they want but I don't believe that when the very same doctors at the very same locations are "graded" so to speak on the number of donations they get from their facility they will always be able to make a decision free from some sort of pressure to get more donations.

It seems to me then, that opt-out would help those physicians. Obviously they shouldn't make decisions based on how many organs they get... but you're right, that kind of stuff will come up. However... they don't get sh*t for organs now. If we get an opt-out system, the doctors won't have to be as organ "greedy" (and therefore can stick more closely to morals) because they'll be a lot easier to come by.
