Some of you may recall this is the SECOND time this year I have had a reaction to my allergy shots. After the first one I went back down a level and worked my way up to maintenance level, this is my second shot at this level with no reaction last time. This time it burned SUPER bad going in again and I thought 'uh oh' but then countered with the thought that it was unlikely to happen a second time and I was just being paranoid. Hmm maybe not.

Those shots are taken 7 hours after my allergy shot, only two shots this time as my third vial is being given at work on a weekly basis and I am having no reaction to that--got it yesterday. I called the on call # but they have not answered so given that it spread from a round red lump to what you see now in under 2 hours, most of it within 30 minutes or so I am not messing around this time. I had a refill on the steroids, called it in and took 60mg which was what he started me at last time. I dont want to let it get out of control again.

This time it happened much bigger much quicker than last time, I am already all itchy on my neck and face. I guess this explains why I started feeling so crummy a few hours after the shot.

If anyone has ANY thougths, ideas, references etc I would be most appreciative. I have a good allergist but if he doesnt have any thoughts tomorrow I will probably be seeking a second opinion (hence the photos).

Allergy Shot Reaction

I think I've used this analogy with you before, but in case I'm brain dead, here it is again.

Think of all the allergies your body is exposed to like water in a cup. You probably go around day to day with your cup 1/2 full. Day in and day out, 1/2 full.

Then you give yourself your shot, which exposes you to more allergens, and that's about 1/2 a cup. So you're just up to the rim of the cup with water, which is why you get a bump the size of a dime or maybe a quarter.

But some days, environmental allergens make your cup 100% full, even without your shot. And if you're already 100% full and you happen to give yourself a shot on that day, well, reference your picture above.

This is why our reactions to allergies shots can vary so much week to week when the shot itself doesn't vary. It's Spring allergy season so I'm not surprised that you might be getting this reaction. That certainly happens to me.

Take care

Nicole,

I don't know much about allergy shots (I will find out for you though) but I can't imagine that this kind of reaction is a good thing. This seems serious to me. I would seek another opinion immediately. My question is... are you supposed to get allergy shots before the season or during it when your sensitivity is so heightened.

I know that with really sensitive people. they can even have a strong reaction to allergy skin testing and my doctor has had to stop the testing and give them a cortisone shot -- because this could be a dangerous situation. So if you are getting a reaction like this -- this can't be good. I recently wanted to be skin tested for chemicals, since there are tests for some -- and my doctor refused to give them to me -- saying that there is too much of a risk of sensitizing me to them. So to me, if your body is reacting like this, it is telling you something.

This is like when I have more inflammation or I am not feeling well, I have to be stricter in avoiding things that are triggers like chocolate, wine (sulfites), cut grass, air pollution, and foods with chemicals like MSG, and preservatives, or non-organic fruits like strawberries and apples which have so many pesticides.

Save-Yes your explanation actually makes the most sense of anyones I got and is what I used to describe to others who ask how in the world you can have an allergic reaction to an allergy shot. That being said I am concerned for the reasonse below.

Night- allergy shots take a while before they work so I and most otehrs take them year round, you start with really tiny doses and work up to an industry standardized maintenance dose, you than continue to get your maintenance every month.

This shot reaction was 7 hours post I did not let it go overnight however given the rapidness of its onset and spread it would have been exactly like last time where it was down into my hands and above my shoulders and I was not willing to go there again.

I had not put it together but about 3.5 hours post I started getting a pretty rapid onset of a sinus headache, my nose was stuffy as well but since I am just getting over a cold I chalked it up to allergies since I had went out at lunch. By the time I got home I was tired and just not feeling well at all. That is when I checked and the lumps were just fairly normal hard red lumps, slightly larger than normal but nothing to write home about.

Although I do not have wheeziness etc (thank you xolair) I am sure this is having an effect on my lungs and I am worried about that. THe other worry I have is having to use steroids intermittently to be able to keep taking allergy shots. My third worry is we were plannning to try and get pregnant starting next month and I obviously cant go around taking steroids when pregnant and I am thinking a reaction like this would be NO good either so.......?

Calling doc today, he did return my call on my cell but I had accidentally left cell when I went to pick up steroids. I am hoping since I didnt let reaction get out of hand (it only spread a bit overnigth) that I dont need a full week this time as the side effects dont truly get me until day 3 or so.

thanks ladies
