We also have our kids (CF and non-CF) on daily probiotics. It makes a huge difference and protects the integrity of the "gut" which is actually responsible for as much as 90% of immune function! Also, energy wise, several aspects of the gut are directly linked to lungs and sinuses...they are related to the same acupuncture point. So if one system is severely out of balance, say the gut, more congestion and issues with lungs and sinuses will be present (this is research on those without CF so you can imagine how it would look for CFers). So, we focus alot on creating and maintaining a healthy gut.
It really is fascinating and worthwhile research to understand how food and proper care of the gut supports us. I know until recently (last 4-5 years) I had no idea how my own issues stemmed from imbalances in the gut. For CF, I believe it is even more important due to the tendencies of being acidic (bad bacteria, candida, and even parasites thrive in this environment), potentially being on antibiotics more frequently than average kids, and inflammation of intestinal lining inherent in CF. I believe probiotics should be standard of care along with much more in-depth nutrition training. You can take all the probiotics in the world but if you ingest tons of sugar and processed foods your gut will still be unable to function properly to protect your body.
This stuff can really change things in my opinion but it is a part of a total approach in my opinion.
